The Textbook for Today’s Management Classes
Today’s managers are confronted with more dynamic challenges and opportunities than every before—through the need to harness technological advances, lead a dispersed and diverse workforce, anticipate and react to constant competitive and geopolitical change on a global scale, and operate in a socially responsible and accountable manner. The book is organized around a strategy-organization-leadership paradigm rather than the traditional plan-organize-control-lead approach. The strategy emphasis leaped out (4 chapters vs. the typical textbook’s single strategy chapter) and leadership was also clearly emphasized (less in chapter terms than in style). I really liked the overall approach. Other distinctive content was on networking (largely absent in other textbooks) and on performance management which had a more practical emphasis than the typical chapter or half chapter on control, which I liked again.
A new innovative approach to a principles of management course which does away with the outmoded 4 functions approach and integrates strategy and organizational theory and individual motivation theory into a comprehensive textbook.
